Target Audience: 4th, 5th and 6th grade students.
a. Introduction to simple machines.
b. Experiment with each of the simple machines.
c. Why and how they are used.
d. What is required to run a machine.
e. Introduce the concept of energy.
a. Introduction to computer programming.
c. Use Block and Scratch programming from code.org and MIT to code simple game scenes.
a. Introduce Lego mindstorm robot.
b. Fix the wheels and axles and explore.
c. Establish and examine the relationship between wheel rotations and linear distance.
d. Program the robot to go forward and back and turn in any direction.
a. Explain and establish the importance of art in STEM education and how it complements STEM.
b. Learn about 3d printing.
c. Use 3d printing to design and print an artistic wheel or any simple machine.
a. Introduce:
i. The concept of ratio.
ii. Ratio of circumference to diameter of a circle which is always a constant: Pi.
b. Explain how the diameter and Pi can be used to program the distance travelled by the lego robot per rotation of the wheel. Use wheels of different diameters and discuss.
